The Disorder I: Trade-Off

This series of prints narrates an encounter between two silhouetted figures, the princess (from Las Meninas) who holds a paintbrush from which paint drips and the figure who wears a plague doctor mask and wields a scythe. These figures appear on the embossed pages of Foucault's first chapter of The Order of Things.  In the third print of the series the shadow of the plague doctor falls onto the page. She appears in the fifth print. from which point the princess figure begins to fade. The gap between the pages progressively widens to introduce an increasing number of  trade ships. Trade ships carried the plague with them, spreading the plague and disorder as they went. The gap between the pages progressively widens, revealing other economies at work.
