The painting Las Meninas by Velázquez(1565) and a subsequent essay on the
painting by Foucault (1966) inform the over-arching framework of The To
Be King Project . It is the insights into structures of power, social and psychological,
represented by Velázquez and analyzed by Foucault, that are used by Dixie
as entry points to negotiate the relationship between border-line space and
center, text and image, power and the gaze.
